Cyprus
This republic is a State internationally recognized, but it only
controls both third of the south of the island. The North third was
occupied by Turkey in 1974, restoring the Turkish Republic of the North
of Cyprus. This last territory is only recognized by Turkey. In the
island also are the sovereign enclaves of the United Kingdom de Acrotiri
and Dhekelia. The island of Cyprus is located in the Mediterranean Sea,
to 113 km to the south from Turkey, 120 km to the west of Syria and 150
km to the east of
Greece
(Kastellorizo island). Cyprus entered like member of the United Nations
the 20 of September of 1960 Cyprus is the third largest Mediterranean
island and one of the most popular tourist destinations, attracting over
2.4 million tourists per year. The economy of Cyprus clearly is affected
by the division of the island in two territories. It highly has a
vulnerable economy, more stabilized after the entrance in the European
Union, with a strong dependency of the sector services and problems of
isolation with respect to the rest of Europe. |
